The Engineering Director is responsible for leading Manufacturing Engineering activities and supporting operations across multiple sites. Incumbent will utilize and improve methods to review a broad spectrum of manufacturing processes to determine potential best practices that can be adopted for the manufacturing area being considered. Will also oversee teams of engineers who assess and implement new technology or process to increase functionality and value for a given product, while maintaining product quality and driving down cost.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans and coordinates engineering activities to develop and apply standardized design criteria and production requirements for parts and equipment used in medical devices or other orthopaedic products

  • Establishes and maintains liaison between design engineering and other departments to formulate and apply design criteria and production requirements for proposed products.
  • Develop, implement and manage special process engineering strategies to optimize quality, cost and delivery of existing products.
  • Support Quality Management System in addressing any issues including CAPA's and ensuring that systemic fixes are implemented.
  • Consults with and provides technical evaluations for other departments (Quality, Product Development, etc.).
  • Generate cost optimization ideas through a rigorous cost data analysis and/or developing new approaches to established processes
  • Conduct analytics to assist management teams in setting cost targets and to support the organization in negotiation and translation into business case / projects
  • Generate mechanisms required to implement processes and manage product flow (e.g. routers, prints, BOMs).

Expected Areas of Competence

  • Experience with manufacturing technologies used in the orthopedic industry is preferred.

  • Proven experience identifying and implement best practice technology or processes to improve the overall performance of a manufacturing operation.
  • Experience guiding and implementing high velocity large scale change initiatives that produce greater level of innovation, quality, service, efficiency, and learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with logistics, sourcing, R&D and other internal functions with proven record of successful negotiations and problem resolutions.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team in the achievement of objectives.
  • Understanding of applicable legal and regulatory requirements within the medical device industry.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and problem solving skills are essential.
  • Must have proficiency and experience in the following areas: capacity planning and development; budgeting for multiple profit centers; development of quality/productivity plans; new product process development; manufacturing flow analysis and implementation, personnel selection, management, and development.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in an applicable engineering or business discipline with a minimum of 10 years of progressive and extensive applicable work experience in manufacturing, quality, or development engineering.

  • A minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience leading diverse, technical teams, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six Sigma certification preferred, either Green Belt, Black Belt, Design for 6 Sigma, or Lean 6 Sigma
  • Project management experience required

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 50% travel (domestic and international)
