JOB PURPOSE:

The primary focus is to provide design and project support for one or multiple current and future company supported product lines

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Design Engineer position requires the practical application of skills consistent with the discipline of mechanical engineering. It requires the application of basic engineering principals with respect to component form, fit and function. The Design Engineer works within complex mechanical assemblies from which details will be generated.

This position requires the identification and application of standards and tolerances as determined by the OEM and used in original designs. The Design Engineer will determine which standard to use and provide technical translation to alternates as required.

The Design Engineer position requires the effective use of resident CAD software for the generation of required assemblies, details, and fabrications. Design formats include three dimensional solid models and two-dimensional drawings.

The Design Engineer position requires a broad-based understanding of manufacturing processes which directly effect design criteria, construction feasibility, manufacturing process, quality, and economy of construction. This includes but is not limited to disciplines of welding, metallurgy, general heat-treat processes and machining capabilities consistent with available resources, both internal and external.

The Design Engineer position requires limited project leadership and written administrative/report details associated with shared project oversight.

This position requires an understanding and practical application of machine tool programming and operation. The complexity of the programming required can vary depending on the equipment used for the given manufacturing process. The machine tool programming requirements can range from 2 through 5 axis applications.

The Design Engineer will be responsible for providing program support to manufacturing. This includes supplying accurate and efficient programs using best practices and proven machining methods. Programming requires effectively utilizing company support CAM and tool-path optimization software.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • This position requires a High School Diploma, two-year degree in mechanical engineering, product design, manufacturing engineering and/or five to seven years in a qualified mechanical design, engineering environment
  • Selected individuals must possess computer skills to maintain effective use of resident design software and Microsoft Office products
  • Math requirements for this position include algebra, geometry and trigonometry
  • Selected individuals must possess both oral and writing skills to effectively convey technically complex and complete ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Must have a practical understanding of standard steel types and machinability in both the annealed and heat-treated condition
  • Must have an understanding of the programming format, language and controls used on the equipment within the manufacturing area. A thorough understanding of coordinate system functions with respect to world coordinate, design coordinate and machine tool coordinate layout is mandatory
  • Must possess organizational and interpersonal skills to work effectively alone and within a team environment
  • Must be capable of working against critical deadlines and function effectively in a multi-task environment

    MEASURABLE DUTIES:
  • Compile, revise and maintain project/task log with an estimated timeline for completion of each project or task. Project/task logs will contain both long term (quarterly, annual) strategic tasks as well as short term (daily, weekly) design requirements. Provide departmental leadership with monthly updates
  • Complete projects/tasks based upon identified priorities and mutually accepted time estimates
  • Communicate needs and initiate requests for necessary design information to facilitate timely completion of assigned tasks. This may require but is not limited to direct communication within Company Divisions, with Strategic Business Partners, Suppliers, Vendors and Customers
  • Work within all current and future organizational and specific engineering ISO procedures
  • Effectively assist in the maintenance of engineering documents and ECN records
  • Provide project oversight and assume limited leadership responsibilities in coordinating the development of complex assembly details and/or new product development initiatives
  • Provide Checker support by reviewing solid models and 2D drawings for accuracy as required
  • Accurately measure and develop understandable sketches of existing components for use as future Reverse Engineering data
  • Accurately build 3D models and/or 2D drawings using company set standards and formats
  • Complete all 3D drawing whether for manufactured components or fixturing using the appropriate engineering standards, tolerances and notes
  • Designed details and/or assemblies along with 3D drawings ae to be created and dimensioned for proper form, fit and function with consideration to current machining and/or welding capabilities both internally and externally
  • Supply accurate and efficient programs using best practices and proven manufacturing methods
  • Supply all programs with adequate documentation including accurate part set up instructions and tool selection using manufacturers recommended application data
  • Effectively utilize company supported CAM and tool-path optimization software
  • Details are to be designed in consideration of the required material and heat treat process
  • All designed details are to carry adequate documentation for future review
  • Limited administrative and/or report writing to be performed as required
  • Perform other engineering functions as deemed necessary by the department leader
  • Work independently or as a team towards critical timelines in a multi-task environment

    MANAGEMENT DIVERSITY:

    This job is non-supervisory but must have a working awareness of and productive interaction with a multiple number or related and unrelated functions

    HUMAN RELATIONS:

    This position exchanges complex/technical and confidential information with peers and management in the development of a proprietary and nonproprietary engineering detail

    PROBLEM SOLVING:

    Problems encountered are numerous and diverse. Thinking is complex, requiring judgements to identify and analyze problems. The incumbent acts within developed business strategies in the resolution of problems and is subject to review during and after implementation of projects unless consultation or assistance is necessary prior to that point
